Victoria Park Market

Victoria Park Market which is located on Victoria Street, merely minutes from downtown Auckland was originally Auckland city's rubbish destructor.  Built in 1905, the buildings were turned over to other businesses such as painters, carpenters, coachbuilders and a blacksmith when more efficient ways of generating power were developed.  As the use of the site continued to develop, twin stable buildings were erected in 1915 which accommodated 90 workhorses.  These horses were used to pull the waste and rubbish carts to the destructor.  In 1918 the buildings along the front of Victoria Street were built and the destructor continued to operate.  However, in the late 1940's, it closed down when it could no longer keep up with the demands of a fast growing city.  Auckland City Council continued to operate their roadsie garbage collection from this location until 1981 when eventually Victoria Park Market saved and restored the buildings for a new purpose.

This was originally an old horse ramp which lead between the stable buildings and
courtyard.  It is now a Celebrity Walk of Fame which was opened by Sir Robert
Muldoon on 12 July 1984

The Celebrity Walk of Fame is where many New Zealanders have been honoured
by placing their hands, feet or combination of both, in cenment.  Above shows
